Introducing a hardy and ancient plant from New Zealand.
Dicksonia and Cyathea are two very ancient tree fern varieties.
They have been growing in New Zealand for millions of years and
in fact date back to the time when dinosaurs wandered the earth.
New Zealand tree ferns are a very special plant. They have a certain
mystique about the way they grow. As the name suggests, tree ferns
have a trunk which supports an amazing and beautiful crown of
fronds. Some of these fronds can reach out to over four metres
(12 ft), giving that subtropical appearance sought after in many
of today's private and public gardens.

Dicksonia fibrosa
Dicksonia fibrosa is one of New Zealand's most hardy tree ferns. It can be found up to 400 m (1300 ft) above sea level. It is quite slow growing at around 3 cm (1.2) per year, and grows best in a cool moist situation. Fibrosa will withstand temperatures as low as -7 deg.C (19 deg.F).
This variety can often be mistaken for its cousin Dicksonia antarctica, from Australia, by the untrained eye.
This magnificent tree fern can be supplied in trunk lengths from 30cm (1) up to 5 metres (16) for that special landscaping project.
Dicksonia squarrosa
This slender tree fern is a very popular landscaping and container specimen in New Zealand. It is fast growing at around 8 to 10 cm (3.5) per year and will withstand temperatures below 4 deg. C (39 deg.F) but protection is recommended during winter.
Advice can be given on request, we can supply trunk lengths from 30cm (1) up to 5 metres (16). We can also supply very unique specimens with multiple trunks.
This tree fern is ideal for that residential landscaping project or containerised for your conservatory.
Cyathea smithii
This very beautiful tree fern has a soft appearance and is suited to a moist, cool sheltered situation. It has a slender trunk and is more inclined to flourish and look its best in an under-planted situation.
This tree fern can be supplied in trunk lengths from 30cm (1) up to 4 metres (13) and is ideally suited to a more sheltered and warmer planting site.
Cyathea medullaris
This majestic tree fern is one of New Zealand's most impressive. It is the fastest growing variety of them all at around 10 cm (4) to 15 cm (5) per year, and can reach a height of 25 metres. It has a very subtropical, palm-like appearance with a black trunk and large light green fronds. It can withstand temperatures below 4 deg.C (39 deg.F). Although the fronds may be frost burned this amazing tree fern will simply flush a new set of crosiers. These will uncurl to form a new set of beautiful green fronds.
This beautiful tree fern is more suited to warmer climates and is an ideal specimen for outdoor landscaping projects. It also grows well and looks great in large indoor settings such as shopping malls were there is some natural light and irrigation available.
Advice can be given for such projects.
We can supply this tree fern in trunk lengths from 30cm (1) up to 10 metres (30.5) and also with a multi- trunk for that unique look.
Cyathea dealbata
This is one of New Zealand's most famous tree ferns because of its common name; the Silver Fern. It is called the Silver Fern because the soft green fronds are under-lined with an iridescent silver colouring which glows at night.
