As a supplier of a product that has recently come under attack from WWF and other conservation groups, I would like to explain to our customers how we source our tree fern trunks and why you can consider our company a safe option as a conservation conscious supplier of environment friendly products.

Tree Ferns (New Zealand) Limited has secured an on-going licence to remove tree ferns and ground ferns from one of the largest man-made radiata pine plantations in the world.

The plantation, which is situated in the central North Island, is not indigenous to New Zealand. Planting began here in 1902 and there is now a huge production forest totalling 281,000 hectares (694,000 acres) which is harvested on a rotational basis.

During the time between planting and harvesting of Radiata pine and
Pseudotsuga-menziesii (28 to 50 years), tree ferns self seed and flourish amongst the pines. Before the plantation owners harvest a block, we are notified and all the tree ferns are removed before they are destroyed.

So in fact we are saving a unique and prehistoric plant, not removing it from its natural environment or causing our indigenous rain forest to disappear.

This means we can supply these relocated tree ferns for the long term because our supply is fully sustainable.
